The GREENEWAY
Throughout City

The North Augusta Greeneway, known to most citizens as the Greeneway, was named after former Mayor Thomas W. Greene (1985-1997). The Greeneway is a paved recreational trail that follows an abandoned railroad right of way purchased by the city in 1988.

Phase I of the Greeneway, 3.3 miles, travels from the Georgia Avenue Bridge to Martintown Road. Phase II, another 1.5 miles, extends the Greeneway to its current western terminus at Pisgah Road. In 1999, the city constructed Phase III, a pedestrian bridge over Martintown Road connecting Phases I and II.

Phase IV, completed in 2000, extended the Greeneway another 0.5 miles east from the Georgia Avenue Bridge to the Clubhouse at the RiverClub Golf Course.

Construction was recently completed on an extension of the Greeneway into the North Augusta riverfront. The 1.5 mile extension forks off the existing trail near Crystal Lake, follows Crystal Creek through the woods to the Savannah River, meanders along the riverbank to the Georgia Avenue Bridge and connects with the roundabout and sidewalk at Riverside Boulevard.

In addition to city funds, construction of the Greeneway has been funded by grants from the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism, South Carolina Department of Transportation and the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control. The city has provided materials, equipment and labor.

The Greeneway is open from dawn to dusk and is regularly patrolled by the Department of Public Safety. Pets are permitted but must be on a leash at all times

LIONS MEMORIAL FIELD
West Buena Vista Avenue

In 1945, the city acquired 8 acres of land located along Buena Vista and Alta Vista Avenues for $1500. The land was purchased for use as a park and designated as a living memorial to those who lost their lives serving in the armed forces.

In October of 1950, the North Augusta Lions Club leased the property from the city for a nominal $1.00 annual fee. The club then improved the land and operated Lions Memorial Field for 29 years. During that time, Lions Field hosted North Augusta High School and Recreation League football teams and numerous area sporting competitions. In 1979 the property reverted back to the city for its continued recreational use.

In the fall of 2000, extensive renovations to Lions Field were completed. Improvements include a new concessions pavilion, new restrooms, new grandstands with seating for 2,000, a new scoreboard, paved and lighted parking, a playground area, practice fields, sidewalks, landscaping and a decorative permieter wall.
