ECONOMIC DEVELOPEMENT PARTNERSHIP
WIn the face of a changing economy, Aiken and Edgefield Counties have taken steps to move into the new millennium. The attraction of new industry is a fastpaced process in which most companies want sites and infrastructure ready to go. For that reason, in 1995, Aiken County announced the formation of Sage Mill Industrial Park, a 1,600 acre park adjacent to the interstate with rail and full utilities approximately six miles from North Augusta.
The anchor tenant, SKF, immediately built a state-of-the-art automotive hub assembly plant soon followed by the construction of a 1.5 million square foot facility, the world’s most advanced tire plant, for Bridgestone/Firestone. Today, Sage Mill Industrial Park has been recognized by national magazines as one of the South’s leading industrial parks with five industries employing over 1,500 people.
The City of North Augusta has been an integral part of the economic success of this area and boasts the state’s newest biotechnology companies: UCB-BioProducts and its sister company, Surface Specialties. UCB occupies the majority of the North Augusta Industrial Park, providing high technology jobs to the citizens of the community.
Based on the capabilities and quality workforce in Aiken County and the region, there is a high potential for developing a technology base along with a strong manufacturing base. In keeping with the County’s thrust in preparing for development, the Savannah River Research Campus (SRRC) is home to the Aiken County Technology Laboratory (ACTL) and the Cooperative Research Center, a 47,000 square foot, three story building that houses office technology companies, scientists and entrepreneurs.
Based on technologies availability at the Savannah River Technology Center at the SRS, development of technology in hydrogen storage, fuel cells, robotics, sensors and other advanced sciences will soon place Aiken County as a leader in the state in the development and application of new technologies.

Aiken and Edgefield Counties have a rich, diverse community with an excellent quality of life that welcomes industrialists, scientists and technicians from around the world. With over 18 international companies in the two-county region, the area can take full advantage of advances in global manufacturing and scientific development. Education is recognized to be paramount and the educational systems have made great strides toward excellence.
Not only are the University of South Carolina Aiken and Aiken Technical College leaders in higher education and technology training, but North Augusta High School and Aiken High School provide students with advanced courses with their International Baccalaureate Program (IBP). The IBP is a rigorous academic program with emphasis on the ideals of international understanding and responsible leadership.

The choice of Aiken and Edgefield Counties for your new business is your first move towards excellence.
